The Los Angeles Lakers’ plans for their starting center position have been thrown into chaos after the trade with Charlotte’s Mark Williams was rescinded due to a failed physical. As a result, the team is now relying on Jaxson Hayes and Christian Wood at center, but both are injured. Two-way bigs Christian Koloko and Trey Jemison III will also be used as options.
With only 15 roster spots available, adding another center would require waiving someone to create space under the second apron hard cap. The Lakers still owe their new superstar duo of LeBron James and Luka Doncic a depth option at center. According to team sources, they have enough room to sign a buyout player who was making less than $12.8 million with his previous team.
Cam Reddish and Christian Wood are potential waiver candidates, but the Lakers may want to wait until after the All-Star break to figure out their next step at center. The recent signing of Jordan Goodwin has also added depth to the guard rotation, but he acknowledged that his defensive skillset is why he was brought to Los Angeles.
