Thousands of Filipinos in Vancouver gathered to celebrate a pivotal moment in Philippine history, but tragedy struck when a vehicle drove into the crowd during Lapu-Lapu Day festivities. The festival honours Datu Lapu-Lapu, who defeated Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.
The celebrations featured a multi-block street party with Filipino food, live performances, and cultural displays. However, just as the party was breaking up, a dark SUV crashed into the crowd. Police have arrested a 30-year-old Vancouver man but have not disclosed the number of fatalities or injured.
Lapu-Lapu’s victory is seen as a symbol of resistance to colonisation in the Philippines. The city on Mactan Island, named after him, serves as a living tribute to his legacy. This year’s celebration was officially recognised by the government of British Columbia, acknowledging the cultural contributions of the Filipino-Canadian community.
The Philippine consulate in Vancouver expressed condolences and called for community strength during this difficult time. Reports indicate that multiple people were killed and injured in the incident, which has left many shaken.
