Large Asteroid Passes Close to Earth on July 28

Asteroid 2025 OW, approximately 210 feet wide, will make its closest approach to Earth on July 28 at a distance of about 393,000 miles. NASA officials say there’s no threat posed by this asteroid and that it’s just part of routine close approaches.

According to Ian J O’Neill, media relations specialist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), “This is very routine.” If a threat existed, NASA would alert the public. They will likely know exactly where 2025 OW will be for the next 100 years, according to O’Neill.

Asteroid expert Davide Farnocchia added that close approaches are a natural occurrence in our solar system. The asteroid won’t be visible with binoculars and is too small to pose an immediate threat.

Another notable event is set to occur in 2029 when asteroid Apophis will approach Earth at a distance closer than geostationary satellites. NASA is monitoring multiple asteroids, including the 2025 OX aeroplane-sized asteroid, which will pass Earth on July 26.

Recent close approaches include asteroid 2025 MM on July 1, measuring around 120 feet wide, and 2025 KX8 on June 4, passing at approximately 1.99 million kilometers away. Asteroid 2025 MG1 safely passed Earth on July 12 at over 3 million kilometers away.
