Larian CEO Swen Vincke Criticizes Industry’s “Profit-Driven Greed”

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke recently criticized the videogame industry for its focus on profit over passion at The Game Awards. He argued that studios are making games solely to increase revenue, rather than because they want to create something unique and enjoyable.

Vincke shared his secret formula for running a successful studio, saying it’s “stupidly simple, but somehow it keeps getting lost.” According to him, the key is treating developers and players with respect, prioritizing game design over profit, and creating games that players will enjoy.

This isn’t Vincke’s first criticism of industry practices; he previously stated in March that corporate greed has devastated studios. However, this time, he took a more lighthearted approach, ending his speech on an upbeat note.

Vincke also praised Game Awards host Geoff Keighley for addressing the issue directly during the show. The Game Changer award was given to Amir Satvat, who supports laid-off game developers in their job search.
