Larian Develops Two New Games Simultaneously, Admits to Chaos

Larian Studios, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced that they are working on two new games simultaneously, with no official titles or release dates yet. In an interview with Gamespot, Swen Vincke, Larian’s CEO and lead developer, shared his thoughts on this ambitious endeavor.

Vincke explained that the idea behind developing two games at once is to reduce downtime for staff and avoid the issue of animators and modellers having too much free time. Instead, production staff will work on one game while another project is in pre-production. This approach aims to minimize the gap between development and launch.

However, Vincke acknowledged that this method comes with its own set of challenges. “In practice, we will probably be miserable,” he admitted. “There’s going to be plenty of stuff that went wrong.”

Vincke described one of the new games as “crazy-ambitious” and “shaping up quite well.” He emphasized the importance of avoiding the stop-start pre-production/production issue that can lead to delays and frustration for staff.

Larian currently has around 470 employees working on multiple projects across seven studios worldwide. Vincke hopes that this approach will result in less ambiguity and a better quality of life for developers.

While details about the two new games remain under wraps, Vincke expressed his optimism that this method will lead to successful releases. He stated, “I hope I can tell you five years from now: we cracked it. We figured out how to make this work.”
