Last of Us Showrunners Confirm Season 3’s New Direction

The showrunners of The Last of Us have confirmed that Season 3 will feature a significant shift in perspective, following the events of Season 2. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann made the announcement during a FYC Emmy event in New York, revealing that Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby, will take center stage.

The decision marks a change from the previous seasons’ focus on Ellie and Joel, with Mazin explaining that the show is about grief rather than revenge. He also poked fun at some fans who have been convinced that Pedro Pascal’s character is still alive elsewhere in the universe.

Dever expressed her desire to explore more of Abby’s backstory through a flashback episode. The season will not feature a showdown between Ellie and two other characters, as previously planned. HBO has not announced a release date for Season 3 yet.

The showrunners’ decision to deviate from the source material may come as a surprise to some fans, but Mazin believes that it’s a key element of what makes The Last of Us special – allowing for creative freedom and taking risks.
