Late-Night TV’s End Could be a Blessing for Comedy

Conan O’Brien believes that late-night TV shows will eventually disappear from television, but hosts like Stephen Colbert are too talented and essential to go away. Speaking at the Television Academy Hall of Fame, O’Brien stated that traditional late-night TV is undergoing “seismic change” due to technological advancements.

O’Brien cited streaming platforms as a way for younger generations to consume comedy, noting that traditional TV has constraints that can be limiting. However, he believes hosts like Colbert will adapt and thrive in new formats, adding that technology can’t dictate their evolution.

Instead of mourning the loss of late-night TV, O’Brien chooses to focus on what remains unchanged. “I think in the most essential way, what we have is not changing at all,” he said. With his own experience pivoting to streaming and podcasting, O’Brien sees an opportunity for comedy to evolve and flourish in new ways.
