Latvia’s Undersea Cable Suspected of being Damaged by External Influence

An undersea fiber optic cable connecting Latvia and Sweden was damaged in the Baltic Sea. The cable, operated by Latvia State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC), linked Latvian town Ventspils with Sweden’s Gotland island. External damage is likely, as confirmed by Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina during a government meeting. investigations are underway involving Swedish authorities and NATO, including patrolling the area and inspecting vessels. LVRTC reported that while two-thirds of services remain unaffected, some delays in data transmission exist. Sweden’s prosecutors have initiated an investigation, seizing control of a ship suspected of sabotage. Previous incidents in the Baltic Sea, such as damaged power cables and pipelines, have been attributed to Russian actions. NATO has confirmed plans to deploy security measures in the area to protect critical infrastructure. Finnish authorities also seized a tanker carrying Russian oil last month, further complicating efforts in the region.
