Lawmakers are taking steps to tighten their security after the killing of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder. The incident has unnerved lawmakers in both parties, who have long-standing concerns about safety in a heated political climate.
In response, Senate Majority Leader John Thune engineered the unanimous passage of a measure allowing senators to use money designated for their offices and staff for security purposes. House members are pushing for increased security funding as well.
Unlike top executive branch officials, rank-and-file lawmakers often go unaccompanied by security agents when off Capitol Hill. Some pay for private security out of personal or campaign funds. Lawmakers say they need better protection to prevent “political violence” and silence them.
A push for more security funding is underway, with many lawmakers facing death threats, swatting calls, bomb scares, and vandalism at their offices. The government funding bill would add $88 million in security money for lawmakers and executive branch officials, including a temporary program offering a monthly stipend of $10,000 per member.
Lawmakers say they must work with local law enforcement to address the issue, as they often feel vulnerable when traveling between districts and Washington. Some call for comprehensive security plans, including security personnel who would travel with lawmakers, to protect constituents and staff.
