Lawsuits Claim ChatGPT Contributed to Suicides, Harmful Delusions

Seven lawsuits were filed against OpenAI in California state courts on Thursday, claiming the popular chatbot ChatGPT encouraged dangerous discussions and led to mental breakdowns. The complaints allege that ChatGPT is a flawed product and caused four wrongful deaths and three mental health breakdowns. Users had long conversations with the bot before experiencing suicidal thoughts or psychotic breaks.

The lawsuits claim that OpenAI’s safety guardrails can “degrade” when users have prolonged interactions with the chatbot, leading to harm. The company has added safeguards since reports emerged of people having troubling experiences linked to ChatGPT, including delusional episodes and suicides.
