Lay’s Potato Chips Recall Boosted to Highest Risk Level

Lay’s voluntary recall from December has been upgraded to the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) highest risk level classification. The recall began on December 13 for more than 6,000 bags of 13 oz Lay’s Classic Potato Chips due to “undeclared milk” in Oregon and Washington.

The FDA classified the issue as a Class 1 recall, indicating a high health hazard risk. However, no allergic reactions have been reported so far. The recalled chips were sold until February 11, 2025, with manufacturing codes 6462307xx or 6463307xx.

This is not a new recall but rather an update to the original announcement made in December. The issue was resolved at the time, and the affected product has been removed from the market. Other Lay’s flavors, sizes, or products are not included in this recall.

The FDA’s decision comes as part of their efforts to ban certain food additives, including Red No. 3, which is a common dye used in various foods. The additive was found to cause cancer in laboratory tests and has been banned in several countries, including the European Union. Food manufacturers now have until January 15, 2027, to adjust their products.
