Lebanon Warns Israel Must Withdraw Fully by Deadline

A woman was killed and several others wounded Sunday when Israeli forces opened fire on residents trying to return to the village of Houla in southern Lebanon, just two days before a ceasefire deadline. The incident comes as tensions rise in Lebanon ahead of the February 18 deadline for Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanese territory.

The agreement, which ended the November war between Israel and Hezbollah, includes a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area. However, there is still uncertainty whether Israel will fully comply with this condition.

Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem said in a televised speech that Israel must withdraw from all occupied Lebanese territory on February 18, citing no excuses for delays. Lebanese officials have rejected an Israeli proposal to remain at five border points after the deadline.

Internal tensions have increased in Lebanon due to a decision by authorities to revoke permission for an Iranian plane, leaving dozens stranded. The move was allegedly sparked by Israel’s claims of Iran sending cash to Hezbollah via civilian flights.

The UN peacekeeping force was attacked last Friday, injuring its outgoing deputy commander. Kassem criticized the Lebanese government for tear-gassing protesters and questioned whether Lebanon is acting independently or on behalf of Israel.
