LeBron James Exercises $52.6 Million Option, Wants Championship in 2025-26

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, according to Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul. James, the NBA’s career scoring leader, aims to compete for a championship next season and beyond.

“We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka],” Paul said. “LeBron wants to compete for a championship, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.” James is 40 and entering his record-setting 23rd NBA season, during which he plans to make every season count.

James has been in talks with the Lakers about his future and has expressed a desire to continue playing for the team. However, his decision on how long he wants to play remains uncertain. He has a no-trade clause in his contract and is also considering other options.

The Lakers are currently exploring ways to strengthen their roster, particularly at center. James was asked about the team’s need for a bigger man, but declined to comment, citing previous statements from teammate Anthony Davis.

With James’ option exercised, the Lakers will now focus on building a title-contending roster around him. Paul stated that LeBron values his partnership with the Lakers and wants to make every season count. The team is supportive of James’ goals and will evaluate what’s best for him at this stage in his career.
