The Los Angeles Lakers’ hope that Deandre Ayton can solve their issues at center next season is uncertain, according to a former Phoenix Suns staffer who has expressed pessimism about the 26-year-old’s ability to make a positive impact. In an interview with ESPN’s Tim MacMahon on the Hoop Collective Podcast, the former Phoenix staffer predicted Ayton will be a “disaster” for the Lakers, citing issues with his style of play and work ethic.
Ayton became the best available option for the Lakers after players like Brook Lopez and Clint Capela agreed to deals with other teams. However, concerns about his ability to score in the paint and his defense have been raised, particularly given the defensive issues the Lakers already face with Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves on the floor.
The former Phoenix staffer’s criticism is not new, as stories have surfaced about Ayton’s “bad ways” off the court, including being late to team flights and practices, skipping rehab appointments, and outbursts in the locker room. The Lakers don’t have a large financial investment in Ayton if things don’t work out, but they are under pressure to improve their production at the center position next season.
Despite these concerns, the Lakers believe that Ayton will respond well to coaching staff, including JJ Redick’s guidance. However, it remains to be seen whether Ayton can overcome his personal and on-court issues to make a positive impact for the team.
