Lee Shau Kee, Hong Kong Tycoon and Founder of Henderson Land, Dies at 97

Hong Kong property magnate Lee Shau Kee has passed away at the age of 97. As one of the city’s richest men, Lee was the founder of Henderson Land, a group he established in 1976. Under his leadership, the company expanded into various sectors, including energy, retail, and transport.

Lee’s wealth was estimated at $30 billion by Forbes, making him one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Hong Kong. He built his empire through smart investments, including equity investments in Chinese state-owned enterprises. Lee also made headlines for his philanthropic efforts, donating billions of dollars to charities in both Hong Kong and mainland China.

Lee’s legacy is marked by his success story, which spanned over five decades. He urged young people not to marry early if they didn’t have a stable income, citing the difficulties of building a career after raising children. Known for his wit, Lee joked about his reputation as “Hong Kong’s Warren Buffett” and even poked fun at himself when his investments didn’t go as planned.

Lee is survived by two sons and three daughters. His legacy will be remembered through his philanthropic efforts and his business acumen, which earned him the nickname “Uncle Four.”
