Legendary Composer Ian Freebairn-Smith Passes Away at 93

Ian Freebairn-Smith, a Grammy-winning composer known for his work on iconic film and TV soundtracks, has died at the age of 93. Born in Seattle, Smith began his career as a group singer with The Singers Incorporated before moving to Los Angeles and collaborating with songwriter Jimmy Webb.

Throughout his illustrious career, Freebairn-Smith composed scores for numerous TV shows and films, including “Airwolf,” “Cagney & Lacey,” “Magnum, P.I.,” and the theme song for “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” He won a Grammy award in 1977 for best arrangement accompanying a vocalist for Barbra Streisand’s hit single “Evergreen.”

Freebairn-Smith’s contributions to Hollywood’s soundtracks are undeniable. His work can be heard on iconic TV series like “Batman,” “Flipper,” and “Gilligan’s Island,” as well as films such as “Peter Pan” and “The Matrix Revolutions.” He also worked with notable artists, including Dean Martin, Barbra Streisand, and Jeff Beck.

In addition to his work in film and TV, Freebairn-Smith had a successful radio career, hosting the midday show at KCSN until 2009. His music can be heard on numerous commercial jingles for major brands, showcasing his signature “California Sound.”

Freebairn-Smith is survived by his brother, four daughters (three of whom are musicians), four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
