Legendary Musician Roy Ayers Dies at 84

Roy Ayers, the iconic singer behind “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” has passed away at the age of 84. His family announced his death in a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, stating he died after a long illness in New York City.

Born in Los Angeles, Ayers was a talented jazz vibraphonist and R&B band leader from an early age. He formed a music group in high school and studied advanced music theory at Los Angeles City College before pursuing a successful music career. Ayers released several hit albums, including “Let’s Do It” (1978), “You Might Be Surprised” (1985), and “Nasté” (1995).

Ayers’ influential song “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” was released in 1976 and has been sampled by artists such as J. Cole and Mary J. Blige. The legendary musician once stated, “I listen as I play, and I’m not caught up in defining the type of music I play.” Ayers will be remembered for his contributions to music, particularly neo-soul.

The family asks for respect during this difficult time, with a celebration of Roy’s life planned in the future.
