Former NFL coach Richard Manual Jauron, a standout running back and defensive back in his playing career, has died at the age of 74. He succumbed to brain cancer after a brief illness.
Jauron’s coaching career spanned multiple teams, including the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears, where he served as head coach. He also held interim roles with the Detroit Lions. As a college athlete, Jauron was a first-team All-America selection as a running back and played eight seasons in the NFL as a defensive back.
Despite being an introverted figure in locker rooms, Jauron was renowned for his strategic football acumen and loyal mentorship of professional athletes. In his hometown of Swampscott, Massachusetts, he is remembered as a beloved hero, rivaling the fame of notable baseball players Tony and Billy Conigliaro, who also hailed from the area and played for the Boston Red Sox.
