Leslie Charleson, Iconic General Hospital Star, Passes Away at 79

Leslie Charleson, the actress best known for her iconic role as Monica Quartermaine on the long-running soap opera General Hospital, has passed away at the age of 79. Charleson played the character from 1977 to 2020, making her the longest-tenured cast member in the show’s history.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1945, Charleson began her acting career as a child and studied theater at Bennett College in upstate New York. She went on to appear in various TV shows, including A Flame in the Wind, As the World Turns, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, and Marcus Welby, M.D.

Charleson’s breakthrough role came when she joined General Hospital in 1977, replacing Patsy Rahn as Monica Quartermaine. The character became a fan favorite for her sharp wit, strong personality, and complex relationships with other characters. Charleson’s portrayal of Monica earned her numerous awards and nominations, including four Daytime Emmy nods.
