Lewes, DE – Residents are warned to be cautious of a new “brushing” scam targeting homeowners. The scam involves receiving unexpected gifts or items in the mail, often with the recipient’s address but no sender information or known retailer.
The unwanted packages can contain various items such as jewelry, electronics, and accessories. When opened, they may include a QR code to scan for more information on who sent the gift. However, this action allows scammers to access the victim’s phone, including personal and financial information.
The Lewes Police Department advises residents not to scan the QR code under any circumstances. Instead, they recommend keeping or discarding the package as needed. If a package appears suspicious, residents are encouraged to report it to the authorities immediately.
