LG Display skipped showcasing its latest and greatest OLED panels at this year’s CES, but Panasonic took center stage by highlighting the company’s new four-layer tandem OLED design. The panel boasts a maximum brightness of 4,000 nits, making it 33 percent brighter than its predecessor.
The innovation behind LG Display’s new panel lies in its Primary RGB Tandem structure, which uses independent stacks of RGB elements to produce light. This technology improves maximum brightness by increasing the amount of light produced by each layer compared to the previous structure.
In addition to improved brightness, energy efficiency has also increased with the fourth-gen LG Display OLED. Color brightness can reach 2,100 nits, a 40 percent improvement over its predecessor. While peak brightness numbers may not be utilized in consumer sets, OLED technology continues to offer perfect blacks, fantastic viewing angles, and fast response times for gaming.
The new panel’s glossy finish is maintained despite Samsung’s emphasis on glare-free displays. LG Display uses “ultra-low reflective technology” to minimize distractions. The industry’s first-ever 4,000-nit OLED display sets a high standard for the future of OLED panels.
