Lightning Strikes Plane at Sao Paulo Airport

A British Airways passenger captured lightning striking a parked plane during a storm in Sao Paulo. The incident occurred at Guarulhos Airport while waiting for his flight, and Warr described it as an opportunity for weather footage. He got lucky when the strike hit right in front of him. Lightning rarely affects commercial aircraft, with only one or two incidents annually. Planes are built to withstand such events despite their rarity.

Passenger Bernhard Warr shared his experience: “As we were watching out the window it was clear that lightning was striking near the airfield, so I went to capture some footage…”

Despite the scary moment, lightning strikes on airplanes aren’t uncommon. Once struck, planes undergo mandatory inspections, which can delay flights.
