US Judge Bars Copies of Lilly’s Weight Loss Drugs, Invalidates Moderna COVID Vaccine Patents
A US judge has issued a preliminary injunction blocking the manufacture and sale of certain weight loss drugs by Eli Lilly, while also invalidating two patents held by Moderna for its COVID-19 vaccines.
The decision affects several obesity treatments sold by Eli Lilly, including Ozempic and Saxenda. The company’s shares fell by 6% following the ruling.
Meanwhile, a separate patent invalidation decision was made on Moderna’s vaccine IP, resulting in Pfizer and BioNTech losing their claims to certain COVID-19 vaccine patents.
The developments come as the race for the next obesity drug gains momentum. Other pharmaceutical companies are working towards bringing their own weight loss treatments to market.
In related news, Novo Nordisk is set to sell its obesity medication Wegovy directly to patients at a lower price. The company aims to increase accessibility and affordability of the treatment.
Additionally, several other healthcare-related stories have emerged this week, including a decision by the US FDA to expand the use of an allergic reaction nasal spray and updates on the development of new radiopharmaceuticals and vaccines.
