Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman expressed confidence that the live-action remake of 2002’s Lilo & Stitch is a box office hit, warranting potential sequels. The film, which opened in theaters on May 23, became the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut since Top Gun: Maverick, earning $183 million domestically. Early reactions praised the film’s adaptation of iconic original moments and its inclusion of Hawaiian culture.
According to director Dean Fleischer Camp, the live-action remake aimed to pay loving tribute to the original while reimagining it in a modern way. Sydney Agudong, who plays Lilo’s sister Nani, expressed appreciation for the film’s spotlighting of Hawaiian talent, hoping it will spark more similar opportunities in the future.
Disney has a history of sequels to draw inspiration from, including Stitch! The Movie and Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch. With its success, Lilo & Stitch live-action remake suggests that future Disney live-action films could be on the horizon, potentially adapting beloved animated movies like Moana and The Aristocats.
