The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department reported a significant increase in flu cases during the month of January, with positive tests rising by 155%. This represents a substantial jump from last year’s numbers, which saw only 360 cases. The current spike has led to concerns about respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as well, with test positivity rates increasing.
According to health officials, there were 918 positive flu tests in January, surpassing previous years. RSV positivity rates also rose, from 13.9% to 15.6%, indicating a growing concern within the community. The department has noted an increase in flu and RSV virus particles in wastewater, further highlighting the outbreak.
On a contrasting note, COVID-19 cases have seen a drop from 67 to 57, potentially suggesting that the current health crisis is not solely centered around these illnesses. However, Health Director Kerry Kernen emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures against respiratory illnesses, as there remains a significant amount of flu and RSV circulating in the community.
