Lindsey Vonn made her first podium since returning from a five-year retirement, finishing second in the super-G at the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley, Idaho. The 40-year-old skiing legend shattered the record of oldest women’s World Cup podium finisher, set by Austrian Alexandra Meissnitzer in 2008.
Vonn, who finished just over a minute behind winner Lara Gut-Behrami, attributed her success to “putting it all on the line” and doing what she knows best. She had struggled with consistency this season, but her partially replaced right knee has stayed healthy, allowing her to focus on speed events like downhill and super-G.
Vonn’s goal is to make her fifth Olympic team in 2026 and retire for good next year. With a record-breaking 138 World Cup podiums, she’s tied for third-most in history. The 82-time World Cup winner expressed relief and satisfaction after the victory, saying it felt like “joy” and was worth all the hard work.
Vonn will compete at the Milan Cortina Games in 2026, where she hopes to make her fifth Olympic team. With a strong finish on Sunday, Vonn is well on her way to achieving her goal.
