Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke have revealed their next collaboration, a 19th-century historical piece, which they hope to finance soon. The two filmmakers have worked together on nine feature films over the years, including the “Before” trilogy, “The Newton Boys,” and “Fast Food Nation.” Their latest film, “Blue Moon,” premieres at Berlin Film Festival.
“Blue Moon” follows American lyricist Lorenz Hart as he struggles with alcoholism and depression on the opening night of Rodgers’ musical “Oklahoma!” The film stars Ethan Hawke, Richard Rodgers played by Andrew Scott, Margaret Qualley as Elizabeth Weiland, and Bobby Cannavale as a bartender.
Hawke expressed his desire to discuss their next project but is hesitant due to pressure and fear of public opinion influencing financing decisions. Linklater also spoke about taking risks in art and the importance of original ideas over financial gain.
When asked about a potential fourth installment of the “Before” trilogy, Hawke said that the first film felt complete, with the circle being closed by having audiences become part of the narrative. However, he left room open for future possibilities, stating that they would check in with each other when ideas emerge.
With “Blue Moon” premiering at Berlin Film Festival, fans are eagerly awaiting news about their next collaboration. The duo’s ability to balance artistic vision and financial considerations remains a key aspect of their partnership.
