Linus Torvalds has released the Linux 6.12-rc6 kernel, which includes a ~2.6% performance optimization from himself and various bug fixes. The stable Linux 6.12 release is expected in two to three weeks, pending the outcome of this cycle.
A total of 40% of the changes are related to drivers, including networking, GPU, and sound, while the remaining 60% consists of tooling, documentation, core MM and networking, filesystems like Bcachefs, xfs, btrfs, and AFS, as well as some minor architecture fixes. No major issues or notable surprises were observed in this release.
The Linux 6.12 stable kernel is expected to be the year’s Long Term Support (LTS) version, making it an exciting release for users. Linus Torvalds has not yet posted his customary release announcement but will update the mailing list when the time comes.
