Linux Creator Linus Torvalds Criticizes DRM Testing Code

Linux creator Linus Torvalds has expressed frustration over the inclusion of a new testing code, dubbed “hdrtest”, in the recent Linux 6.15 graphics driver updates. The code is intended to ensure that the DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) header files are self-contained and pass kernel-doc tests.

However, Torvalds believes that the code’s inclusion is unnecessary and causes problems during the build process. He notes that the “hdrtest” code slows down the build due to its regular use in allmodconfig builds, instead of being run as a simple test. Additionally, it leaves behind temporary files (dubbed “turds”) in the include directories.

Torvalds suggests that the testing should be done by individual developers as part of their own checks, rather than being forced on others. He recommends removing the code from the regular build setup and instead providing a way for developers to run the test independently.
