The Lion King continues to dominate the box office, solidifying its position as a top-grossing film during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. According to estimates, Disney’s The Lion King is expected to earn $15.5 million or more in domestic ticket sales, making it the clear winner of the long holiday weekend.
Rivaling The Lion King’s success is Sony’s One of Them Days, a female-led Black comedy that has garnered positive reviews and praise for its portrayal of diverse audiences. The film is estimated to have earned $14 million in its four-day debut, beating expectations and landing it in a tie with The Lion King for the top spot.
On the other hand, Warner Bros.’s Wolf Man underperformed at the box office, taking in an estimated $12 million for its four-day run. Despite its pedigree, including writer-director Leigh Whannell behind 2020’s surprise hit The Invisible Man, the film failed to impress audiences and critics alike.
Other films also performed well over the long holiday weekend, with Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continuing its reign as a top-grossing franchise film. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera rounded out the top five, while specialty releases like Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown and Universal’s Wicked brought in significant earnings.
The box office numbers may shift again by Monday morning, but for now, The Lion King remains the clear winner of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
