Detroit’s defensive front looked stronger than ever on Sunday as Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport reunited at the edge of the line. Both missed significant time last season due to injuries, with Hutchinson suffering a broken leg in Week 6 and Davenport playing only two games. However, they appeared sharp in practice, suggesting a big impact for the duo in terms of pressure and sacks.
The offensive line also showed movement during practice as coaches search for the perfect combination. The first team featured Dan Skipper at left tackle, Christian Mahogany at left guard, Tate Ratledge at center, Graham Glasgow at right guard, and Penei Sewell at right tackle. Taylor Decker started camp on the PUP list due to a shoulder injury.
A new drill introduced by defensive coaches added an exciting element to practice. Defenders had to sprint to four footballs spaced out in the middle of the field after blowing up-downs. The last player to pick up a ball had to do more reps, adding a fun and challenging twist to the session.
Tight end Sam LaPorta continued his impressive spring, catching a big completion on the first play from quarterback Jared Goff. He’s expected for a monster season in John Morton’s offense. Meanwhile, veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick made an impressive catch down the right sideline, showcasing his size advantage over slot cornerback Amik Robertson.
Detroit’s second-round draft picks, Tyleik Williams and Tate Ratledge, are poised to play significant roles out of the gate. With Alim McNeill possibly returning in November, they’ll be key contributors to the team’s defense. The competition for backup quarterback spot between Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker is expected to be intense throughout camp.
Finally, second-year cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. left practice early due to a chest injury, which will need evaluation by medical staff.
