The Detroit Lions are set to explore alternative options at running back after star player David Montgomery will miss significant time due to injury. With Jahmyr Gibbs and Craig Reynolds in place, the team is looking to sign a new running back to bolster their depth.
Signing a practice squad player is the most viable option, as the Lions have done so with Isaiah Thomas, Myles Adams, Kwon Alexander, and Jonah Williams this season. Two promising candidates are Dalvin Cook from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad and Royce Freeman from the Chicago Bears’ practice squad.
Dalvin Cook, a four-time Pro Bowler, has been elevated to the active roster twice but has struggled with production due to injury concerns. At 29 years old, he is dealing with multiple injuries that have caused him to miss 27 games over eight seasons. Despite these issues, his playing style and athletic profile align well with Montgomery’s.
Royce Freeman, a veteran running back, could provide a complementary option for Jahmyr Gibbs. His size and strength make him an asset in short-yardage situations, but concerns about his readiness to play may hinder his chances.
Zonovan Knight, another player who compares favorably to Montgomery athletically, is also being considered. He brings special teams experience and is more agile than the veteran, making him a valuable asset for the Lions. His ability to fill in for Khalil Dorsey’s injured kick returner role could be a significant benefit.
As the Lions navigate their depth chart, these practice squad players will likely play key roles in finding a suitable replacement for Montgomery.
