The Detroit Lions are facing another injury blow, as running back David Montgomery suffered a torn MCL and will undergo season-ending surgery on his knee. The injury occurred during Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Montgomery limped off the field in the second quarter but was able to return to the game. His last snap came with 10:34 in the fourth quarter. Lions head coach Dan Campbell described Montgomery as “the ultimate teammate, competitor” and expressed his disappointment at losing a key player.
The loss of Montgomery will significantly impact the Lions’ offense, which relied heavily on him for steady workhorse play and converting short-yardage situations. With Montgomery out, Jahmyr Gibbs will likely take on a heavier workload, while Craig Reynolds may fill the short-yardage role. Rookie Sione Vaki could also see some reps.
This injury is part of a growing list of losses for the Lions, who have already seen key players like Alim McNeill and Carlton Davis suffer season-ending injuries. The team has 18 players on injured reserve, including 13 defenders.
Coach Campbell remains optimistic about the team’s chances despite the setbacks. He emphasized that the injuries provide opportunities for younger or underutilized players to step up and contribute. “We’ll do what we have to do to win a game,” he said. The Lions currently sit at 12-2 with a postseason spot already clinched, but their Super Bowl aspirations are starting to look uncertain.
