Lions Training Camp Takeaways: Gibbs Poised for Bigger Role

The Detroit Lions’ training camp is underway, and with it comes a new era of opportunity under the guidance of offensive coordinator John Morton. One player who’s likely to see increased action is third-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The team developed him further in the spring by having him work at various positions and through the route tree. After a 1,929-yard season last year, Detroit may be on the verge of unlocking another aspect of Gibbs’ game.

Meanwhile, receiver Jameson Williams has built significant momentum entering July. As a seasoned veteran with three full NFL seasons under his belt, he’s matured into a sharper route runner and smarter player. Williams has also gotten bigger and stronger, which is evident in how he’s handling press coverage. His positive attitude is noticeable as well, as seen during Tuesday’s practice where he helped out younger receivers.

On the defensive side of the ball, Marcus Davenport is a player to watch. With improved movement, athleticism, and fluidity, he could provide the Lions with the opposite corner duo they’ve been seeking. However, health concerns have limited his performance in previous seasons. If Davenport stays healthy, he’ll be an asset for the team.

Free-agent cornerback D.J. Reed is another addition to watch. As a leader on the Jets’ defense three years ago, Reed brings versatility and ability that will complement new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s creative approach. Reed will join players like Brian Branch, Amik Robertson, and Terrion Arnold in a secondary with position flexibility.

The interior of the offensive line also holds interest, particularly at center. Tate Ratledge emerged as a potential solution after showcasing his learning abilities during the combine. If he works out, and veteran Graham Glasgow can solidify one guard spot, the team will need to determine whether Christian Mahogany can replace him in the other position.
