A deadly listeria outbreak linked to chicken alfredo fettucine products has killed three people, led to one pregnancy loss, and hospitalized 16 others. The outbreak, which includes 17 reported cases in 13 states, began last July.
The affected products were produced by FreshRealm, a food manufacturer with sites in California, Georgia, and Indiana. Recalled products include Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo fettucine tender pasta with various ingredients and best-by dates of June 27 or earlier. Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettucine Alfredo is also among the recalled items.
The listeria strain that caused illness was detected in a sample of chicken fettucine alfredo in March, but officials have not identified its source. Cases were reported through retail shopper records and interviews with sick individuals, resulting in deaths in Illinois, Michigan, and Texas.
Symptoms of listeria infections include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Listeria outbreaks can be deadly, particularly for older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and their newborns.
Federal officials are investigating the outbreak and have advised consumers to discard or return the recalled products. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that about 1,600 people get sick from listeria infections each year, resulting in approximately 260 deaths.
