A nationwide recall has been issued for frozen shakes sold to nursing homes, hospitals, and other institutions after a deadly listeria outbreak linked to at least 11 deaths and 37 hospitalizations. The Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) said the drinks were manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy in Indiana.
The outbreak has been ongoing since 2018, with cases reported in 21 states, including California, Florida, and New York. Most people infected with listeria show symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle aches within a few days or no symptoms at all. However, certain groups, like those 65 and older, pregnant, or with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk of serious infection.
Sysco Imperial, the food distribution company that initially sold the contaminated shakes, has recalled the products and stopped purchasing more from the Fort Wayne facility where they were made. Lyons Magnus, the company distributing the drinks, also issued a recall statement, citing potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
