A deadly outbreak of listeria illnesses has been linked to frozen supplemental shakes sold to hospitals and long-term care facilities. The FDA reports 11 deaths and 37 hospitalizations associated with Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial products, which were distributed nationwide.
The investigation began in November when the FDA was notified about potential contamination. Environmental samples confirmed the outbreak strain of listeria in the drinks. Cases have been reported in 20 states, and the CDC warns that symptoms can occur within 1-4 weeks or even sooner.
Symptoms of listeriosis include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever, and muscle aches. Pregnant individuals are at risk for severe complications, such as miscarriage, premature delivery, and life-threatening infections in newborns. Sysco has stopped distribution of affected products and notified customers about the recall.
