The LIV Golf League is set to begin its fourth season on Thursday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking a significant shift in the league’s approach to television and competition format. Here are seven key aspects to watch as the season gets underway.
LIV Golf has secured a network TV deal in the US for the first time, with Fox Sports broadcasting events across various platforms. The league will have several rounds on the main Fox channel, mainly during U.S.-based events.
Major championships such as the U.S. Open now offer direct exemptions to LIV golfers through individual points listings. This change is a significant improvement over previous seasons and may lead to more opportunities for LIV players in future majors.
The team format will see all four scores counting towards the team score this year, a departure from last season’s system. The league has also opted for a younger roster of players, with newcomers such as Tom McKibbin, Yubin Jang, and Ben Campbell joining veteran Anthony Kim.
LIV Golf will play at five new venues this season, including Riyadh, Mexico City, South Korea, Indianapolis, and Michigan. This expansion highlights the league’s growing presence in global golf.
Scott O’Neil has taken over as CEO, aiming to project a more conciliatory tone while working within the existing professional golf landscape. A proposed deal between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour/DP World Tour is still being negotiated.
Notably, several LIV events will overlap with PGA Tour competitions, marking a shift towards increased competition. The league’s final three events coincide with the FedEx Cup playoffs, setting the stage for an intriguing showdown between rival tour circuits.
