LIV Golf Introduces New Scoring Format

LIV Golf has made significant changes to its scoring format ahead of its season-opening tournament in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. For the first time in the circuit’s history, every player’s score in every round will count toward their team’s total score.

The change means that players’ performance is now under greater scrutiny, and high scores can be a major killer. The previous system allowed teams to balance out weaker individual performances with stronger ones from other team members. However, this new format emphasizes the importance of depth and consistency among team players.

LIV Golf has also introduced changes to its substitution policy. If a player withdraws during play, their team may select a reserve player to complete the round or tournament. The rules clarify when the substitute begins play and how they contribute to the team score.

The new format is expected to increase volatility on the leaderboard and put more pressure on teams and individual players alike. LIV Golf’s six new full-time players, many of whom are 25 or younger, will be asked to produce immediately without a gradual easing into their environment. The changes also suggest that teams with strong No. 4 players will have a greater advantage in the new format.
