Liverpool Set New Club Record with £116m Florian Wirtz Signing

Liverpool have agreed to sign Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz in a deal that could reach a British transfer record fee of £116 million, sources told ESPN. The 22-year-old attacker joins the Reds after two rejected bids from the German club.

Wirtz’s signing will surpass Liverpool’s previous club-record acquisition of Darwin Núñez for £85m in 2022. He is expected to have a transformative impact on the team, similar to that of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker since their arrivals in 2018.

The German midfielder was a top target for several major clubs, including Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Real Madrid. Liverpool successfully outcompeted these teams for Wirtz’s signature, with senior Anfield figures hoping he can bring the same level of success as his new teammates. This is not the only major signing for Liverpool this summer, with Jeremie Frimpong joining earlier, and Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez also being pursued by Arne Slot.
