Local Grocery Stores Struggle with Empty Shelves Due to Cyberattack

Empty shelves have been spotted at several grocery stores in Eugene, including Market of Choice, the Eugene CHEF’STORE, and Friendly St. Market. The shortage is attributed to a cyberattack on United Natural Foods, a large wholesale distributor of food and non-food products.

On June 9, unauthorized activity was detected in the system, forcing the company to take some systems offline. This has had a ripple effect, causing shortages at various stores that rely on United Natural Foods for their supplies. Some food trucks and restaurants have also been affected by the cyberattack.

Friendly St. Market reported missing dry goods, frozen goods, and dairy products like ice cream and milk from their inventory. The store received a new shipment on June 17 and hopes to return to normal operations soon. In contrast, Eugene CHEF’STORE assured customers that the empty shelves are temporary and that they are working with their supplier to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

The shortage has had a significant impact on local businesses like Red Hen Kitchen, which relies on flour from CHEF’STORE for their baked goods. The owners have been forced to find alternative suppliers, leading to reduced production and potential quality concerns.

While Whole Foods reported some empty shelves on June 18, the store is working to restock its shelves as quickly as possible and apologized for any inconvenience caused to customers. It’s unclear when the shortage will be fully resolved, but local businesses like Friendly St. Market are already seeing improvements in their product supply.
