Local Paper Shuts Down Over Defamation Suit Against Mayor

The Everett Leader-Herald, a Massachusetts newspaper with nearly 140 years of history, will close its doors due to a $1.1 million defamation lawsuit filed by Mayor Carlo DeMaria against the paper’s editor and owners. According to court documents, Editor Joshua Resnek admitted to fabricating allegations about Mayor DeMaria to harm his political career. In an email, Resnek described creating false stories that hurt DeMaria, branding him “Kickback Carlo.” The paper agreed to pay $1.1 million to settle the lawsuit and cease operations.
