Long Beach is cracking down on shoplifting, requiring major retailers to add staff and reduce dependence on self-checkout. The city’s “Safe Stores are Staffed Stores” ordinance aims to protect employees and shoppers from theft by limiting the number of items that can be bought through self-checkout.
The measure has sparked debate among retailers, who warn that it could lead to longer lines and higher prices. Some stores have already closed their self-checkout lanes in response to the new rules. The union representing grocery workers supports the ordinance, saying it will improve safety and security for employees.
The issue of shoplifting is a growing concern across the US, with theft incidents increasing by 93% from 2019 to 2023. Long Beach’s ordinance sets a limit of one staff member per three self-checkout stations and requires stores to hire more staff if they want to open more kiosks.
