Long COVID, a persistent and debilitating condition affecting thousands of Minnesotans, remains shrouded in mystery five years after its emergence in the state. While millions moved on from the pandemic, many continue to struggle with work and daily activities due to post-COVID fatigue and other symptoms.
According to a federally funded project, the demographic groups most at risk for long COVID include older adults and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. Researchers are working to map out the biological and cellular origins of the condition, but more studies are needed to find effective treatments.
Currently, treatment focuses on managing symptoms, such as adjusting medications and tailoring exercise plans to maximize energy without causing malaise. Some patients have seen delayed recovery after months or years of having long COVID, leaving Engebretson hopeful that her own symptoms will lift soon.
As the medical community continues to search for answers, advocates are concerned about recent budget cuts that could reduce research funding, potentially hindering progress for patients with ME/CFS, who have a 5% chance of full recovery.
