Loongson Teases “World-Leading” Performance for Next-Gen CPU

Chinese chipmaker Loongson has teased the upcoming release of its next-generation CPU, dubbed the 3B6600. According to a senior executive, Hu Weiwu, the processor will offer “world-leading” performance. The CPU is expected to be released in the second half of 2025.

The 3B6600 features eight LA864 cores clocked at 3 GHz and integrated LG200 graphics. It’s likely that this processor will be used in servers and PCs, given Loongson’s focus on developing indigenous chips for these markets.

Hu also mentioned that Loongson aims to launch “at least one server or PC chip every year on average,” indicating a regular cadence of new product releases.

The most notable aspect of the 3B6600 is its single-core performance, which Hu claimed would be in the world’s leading ranks. This could indicate significant architectural changes and optimizations, making it an exciting development for those following Loongson’s progress.

It’s worth noting that previous information suggests the 3B6600 will use a 14/12nm process, not 7nm as initially rumored. This could still result in impressive performance gains, especially considering Loongson’s focus on developing its own technology rather than relying on foreign fab partners.

As always, it’s essential to wait for independent reviews and benchmarks before making any definitive judgments about the 3B6600’s performance. Nevertheless, Loongson’s continued progress in developing high-performance CPUs is certainly an exciting development for those following indigenous chip technology.
