World Athletics president Lord Coe has welcomed the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that defines a woman as biologically female, saying it will benefit women’s sport by bringing clarity on who can compete. The ruling removes legal uncertainty and interpretation, allowing for a more inclusive approach while maintaining integrity in women’s sports. World Athletics introduced a swab test to verify biological sex earlier this year, which looks for the SRY gene found almost always on the male Y chromosome. This policy aims to protect elite female athletes while still valuing inclusivity and sport participation for transgender competitors. The ruling affects various sports, including athletics, cycling, aquatics, and cricket, which have implemented either outright bans or eligibility criteria for transgender women in women’s events.
