Taylor Swift defined the term “squad goals” in 2015 with her highly publicized music video for the “Bad Blood” remix with Kendrick Lamar. The song and its accompanying video brought together an all-star female cast, including Cindy Crawford, Gigi Hadid, and Hailee Steinfeld.
Two sketches on Saturday Night Live (SNL) season 41 were inspired by Swift’s girl squad moment. One sketch envisioned a post-apocalyptic world controlled by Swift and her crew, while another featured Tina Fey and Amy Poehler recreating the music video with cameos from Gayle King and Robert Downey Jr.
However, when Swift was approached about making a cameo in one of the sketches, she reportedly refused. In a call with Lorne Michaels, she asked him to remove the sketch entirely, and he responded by saying “Taylor, I do not negotiate with terrorists.” Michaels has since revealed that Swift sent him flowers and a note saying “I hope there’s no bad blood.”
Despite the initial controversy, Swift has appeared on SNL multiple times over the years. She has hosted the show twice and made several musical guest appearances.
In recent years, spoofs of Swift’s songs have become a regular part of SNL. Ryan Gosling, for example, performed his own rendition of “All Too Well” inspired by his role in Barbie. The sketch was a way for him to process his character’s break-up with the film.
A 50th Anniversary Special airs on February 16 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, and fans can look forward to more hilarious sketches and celebrity appearances on the iconic show.
