The Los Angeles Angels have announced that manager Ron Washington will remain on medical leave for the remainder of the 2025 season. Washington, 73, was initially placed on leave due to an undisclosed medical issue in June and had hoped to return to his role this season. After undergoing further testing, the team has decided it is in his best interest to step away from managing the team.
Ray Montgomery will serve as interim manager for the Angels, who are currently 40-41 on the season. Despite Washington’s departure, the team remains optimistic about his long-term prognosis and says he is “in good spirits.” The Angels’ players expressed gratitude for the news, saying they want to see Washington get better and return to his role.
Washington had been managing the Angels since November 2023 and had turned around a franchise that had navigated eight consecutive losing seasons. He was known for his infectious personality and teaching abilities, which had earned him a reputation as one of the game’s best coaches. The team will continue to rely on the lessons he has instilled in them, led by players such as Mike Trout, Zach Neto, and Logan O’Hoppe.
In a statement, general manager Perry Minasian said the team will take it “day by day” and do whatever is best for Washington moving forward. The Angels’ recent resurgence, including 14 wins in 23 games in June, is largely attributed to Washington’s influence, according to Minasian.
