Los Angeles Immigration Protests Enter Third Day Amid National Guard Presence

Protesters clashed with law enforcement in downtown Los Angeles for a third day on Sunday, as the National Guard arrived to support federal agents conducting immigration operations. The protests began on Friday, when dozens gathered in the Fashion District after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents appeared at an apparel manufacturer.

On Saturday, separate clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement officers in Paramount, with reports of tear gas and pepper balls being deployed. Tensions escalated later that day, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department ordering protesters to disperse, leading to clashes with police.

President Trump signed a memo on Friday ordering 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles to protect federal officers conducting immigration operations, despite objections from California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The move was seen as an escalation of the situation.

As night fell on Saturday, protesters and law enforcement continued to clash in Compton, with police using flash-bang grenades and rubber bullets to disperse crowds. Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, where a line of officers formed a barrier and attempted to clear them away using tear gas, pepper balls, and other crowd-control munitions.

On Sunday, nearly 300 National Guard troops arrived at the detention center, with more than a dozen Homeland Security officers in riot gear joining them. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the building, and tensions escalated as police attempted to disperse them using tear gas and other munitions.
