A long-lost Vincent van Gogh painting, “Elimar”, has been authenticated as a genuine work by experts from a New York-based art firm, LMI Group International. The piece was sold at a Minnetonka garage sale in 2016 for less than $50 and had previously been denied authenticity by the Van Gogh Museum.
The report, released after four years of research, claims that “Elimar” matches the style and materials used by van Gogh during his time in a psychiatric asylum in Southern France. Experts point to similarities between the painting’s letters and other autograph works by van Gogh, as well as DNA analysis of a hair sample that confirms its human male origin.
The firm’s data-based approach has been praised for setting a new standard in art authentication. If confirmed authentic, “Elimar” could be worth at least $15 million. The LMI Group plans to unveil their findings in private viewings to major van Gogh scholars and dealers later this month.
